Reading & Writing Volunteer Programs
Reading Volunteer Program - 8th Year!
Why do we have Reading Volunteers?
• When children read with accomplished readers, children learn vocabulary, sight words, background knowledge and remain interested.
• Children and adults enjoy sharing books and conversations.
• Reading Volunteers are a strong part of Odyssey’s web of caring community.
• Odyssey strives for mastery of reading for every child.
In 2006-2007, 120 children at Odyssey read with volunteers.
Volunteers read with one child ½ hour a week throughout the year.
Reading Volunteer times:
8:15 - 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday
1:00 - 1:30 p.m. Tuesday
Writing Volunteer Program - New!
Odyssey is currently shaping a Writing Volunteer Program for kids in grades 5-8. The proposed schedule is that Writing Volunteer mentoring and training would occur on Friday mornings. Each session is scheduled for about 45 minutes. Perspective volunteers would need to attend at least four sessions: two in which they watch a child being tutored and two in which they practice tutoring. A volunteer then commits to one child at least for the duration of one writing project. Volunteers may continue to receive and give ongoing support as needed through the Friday morning sessions. Times and days for meeting with the child are dependant on classroom needs and therefore are not yet set and may be flexible.
